The Italian Cypress (cupressus sempervirens), or Mediterranean Cypress, is a great outdoor bonsai tree to grow in groups. Originally found in the eastern Mediterranean area, this bonsai is susceptible to the cold. This means you’re going to either have to bring it in during the winter or grow it in a fairly warm climate. However, it’s certainly worth the trouble. These bonsai look amazing when grown in small groves. They feature very fine green/gray leaves that actually grow in flattened sprays. They also grow tiny elongated brown cones during the year, something that is somewhat rare in bonsai. Read the rest of this entry…

A lot of people are tightening up their spending habits these days. Even though the news on the economy seems to be getting a little brighter here and there, many of us are still keeping a closer eye on where the money goes and where we can cut corners. Of course, one of the easiest ways to save money on a regular basis is to bring your own lunch to work or school. Eating out can really put a dent in your wallet and bring food from home can make a big difference in your weekly spending and probably your eating habits as well. When I first came across these cool magnetic name badges, I could hardly believe my eyes! I’d never seen anything quite so artistic, amusing and interesting, all at the same time. Name tags and name badges are worn by so many employees these days that it’s hard to imagine anything out there that would really stand out. But for something that a medical professional could wear as an identification tag to lighten up the atmosphere in the clinic, this one can’t be beat. Read the rest of this entry…

When it came to the War Sword, it was not only referred to as one of the most powerful swords used during the 14th and 15th centuries, but it was also the one that was said to be the most used. Among those resources that cited this sword was one of Hans Talhoffer’s famous fencing books. Read the rest of this entry…

My young daughter needed to find an environmental project for fifth grade class and her suggestion was to stop using bottled water. Unfortunately, we live in a community where the water tastes bad, so I told her that wasn’t an option. However, my precocious child had already done her homework, and suggested that we could buy a affordable countertop water filter to make the tap water easier to drink. In fact, she had been saving money from her allowance, and offered to pay for it as part of her project. How could I say no? It was a good cause and something she really believed in. If you have a small dog, and they stay indoors with you then they most likely want to get on the furniture with you. While this is not a problem if you don’t mind that sort of thing, it could wind up costing you your dogs joint health in the long run. That is why a product like this 4 step pet stair is a wise purchase to make. It is a light weight foam stair for your dog. You can select up to 4 different fabric covers for aesthetic appeal. It comes with a standard beige shearling cover and the other 4 are for personal taste and to have a backup cover in case the beige cover gets damaged. The 4 step is made for smaller dogs. Creamy, rich chocolate and nice, strong coffee just naturally go together. I suppose you could just have a little piece of chocolate with your cup of coffee, but why not combine them! This Swiss Mocha Coffee Mix is incredibly satisfying and delicious. I buy the best instant coffee I can find so the flavor stands up and asserts itself against the cocoa. If you like your cocoa very sweet, you can adjust the sugar you use, but I like to have a little bite to my mocha-coffee combination. You can substitute decaffeinated coffee if you need to, but just be sure to use a very rich coffee. This coffee will spoil you for plain old cream and sugar. It will spoil you for plain hot cocoa, too! Read the rest of this entry…

I remember my mom’s kitchen can opener – she had purchased it in brown to match the brown refrigerator she had. It had a knife sharpener in the back, though I don’t recall the knife sharpener ever working very well on it. It was a long time ago and it was a rather clunky looking gadget that never seemed to know where it belonged on the kitchen counter. It ended up being parked near the stove and unfortunately it became a bit rusty and coated with kitchen grease over the years. Luckily can openers have come a long way since back then, and this Ergo Cordless Can Opener is by far one of my favorites. Read the rest of this entry…

I have been scouring the internet for months trying to plan all of the details for my upcoming wedding in July. I’m getting married in my husband-to-be’s hometown of Vienna, Austria. Since my wedding is abroad, only my closest friends and relatives will be able to attend. My two bridesmaids and my sister, who is my Maid of Honor all have very different tastes. I want to incorporate their individual tastes into each of their gifts and still maintain the theme of travel, since my wedding will be so far away from home.
My friend Jenny loves make-up. She has tons of it and won’t go anywhere without schlepping it all behind her. When I saw the Personalized Cosmetic Bag in the Unique Bridesmaids Gifts section on EyeCandyGift.com, I knew that it would be the perfect gift for her and I could have it monogrammed with her last initial. My friend, Alisa, is much more sporty than Jenny. I spotted the Pretty in Pink Sport Bag and immediately ordered it for her with her initials monogrammed onto the side. Lastly, my sister was the hardest to decide for. She doesn’t really wear jewelry, and isn’t much into cosmetics, like Jenny. I found the Card Holder and Keychain Set and knew that it was perfect for her. There are so many items on the eyecandygift site that perfectly fit my theme of travel and I found a unique gift that fit each one of my very unique bridesmaids.

I’ve always been someone who loves munching on crunchy snacks. It’s hard for me to sit down and watch a game or movie without wanting a snack to go with it. Unfortunately I started gaining a little weight because of this habit and then I tested high for cholesterol as a result. I did a little research and learned that almonds are good for cholesterol and so I started snacking almost exclusively on roasted almonds instead of chips and cheese crackers. But I was stunned when my next blood test didn’t reveal any positive results. I told a friend about this and he said I could have the best of both worlds. He said I could keep eating almonds and lose weight and lower cholesterol at the same time. Read the rest of this entry…

As Thanksgiving fast approaches, I’ve started looking ahead to making plans for the holiday. While it’s still weeks away, I like thinking about the dinner menu and desserts ahead of time so everything goes smoothly. Plus some family members enjoy bringing their own dish or dessert, so they like knowing what’s in store to prevent ending up with duplicate dishes. This year I am very exciting about cooking the turkey, because I’ll be making it in my new Romertopf maxi clay baker. Read the rest of this entry…
